Have you ever been out and about and heard this in a conversation?
"We don't use sarcasm in our house."
"Sarcasm is rude."
"Sarcasm is just a form of lying, we don't tolerate such things."
Perhaps you yourself have said things like that. Or maybe you were one of the kids whose parents uttered such. Well either way--I pity you. Cause there is something else these persons seem to have forgotten:
Sarcasm is freaking AWESOME.
Yeah, that's right. That WASN'T sarcasm. Its true. Sarcasm is hilarious. If its funny, a third of the time there is some form of sarcasm involved. Not letting your kids use sarcasm in the home is virtually the same as home-schooling if you are aiming for future social awkwardness. Yeah yeah... here come the home-schooled/home schooling parents coming down on me, but I'm just basing this on my own experiences. EVERY SINGLE HOME-SCHOOLED PERSON I HAVE EVER MET HAS BEEN STRANGE. There you have it. That's all I can say in that department. Not that they weren't likable or nice---but they certainly didn't have it easy when they hit high school and tried to fit in. NO sir.
Square pots and round lids.
Ever met that one person that just couldn't tell when you were kidding??? How it RUINED anything funny ever said? How they then would assume you were kidding when you weren't and everyone else would stand around scratching their heads because, who IS this guy??? Yeah... That's what happens. Parents, I URGE you--let the sarcasm run freely like the waves over the sand. Don't set your lovely blond daughter up to look ditsy. Don't hang your son out to dry by making him look like a dumb jock except without any athletic ability. Help them to recognize sarcasm. Not only will it assist them in their journey to adulthood, I guarantee that they will be funnier, well adjusted, and three times better looking.
And that last part was sarcasm. Just testin' ya.

I've never met the anti-sarcasm people. I'll bet they lead REALLY exciting lives, though. Full of muted joy and half smiles.
~I have to say---I love your blog! Especially this post about sarcasm.
I have a friend that is very nice--but also very backwoods naive. Not only was she home-schooled, but she told me her parents are "modern-day" Mennonites....apparently they watch a couple of TV channels and drive a vehicle.
My friend "E" was a social worker at a city hospital but gave it up to persue a different career path. She ended up moving to Thailand to learn Thai Massage and Tragar/Mentastics body work (all about the mind/body/spirit connection---tres cool stuff) So, she's this worldly person that has travelled abroad all by herself, but I literally have to explain everything to her!
She laughs when I tell her something that is funny---but then after a few seconds she will say, "I don't get it." That of course makes me scratch my head and say "uhm, what part didn't you get?"
It is so awkward trying to explain something to someone and have them tell you that they still don't understand why that is funny.
Things that make you go hmmmm?
I am the sarcasm queen in my family and amongst my friends. Nobody ever knows what I will say and there is little that I won't comment on because I swear I could literally spontaneously combust if I hold back my words. I really don't know why "E" even considers us compatible, but hey---it works.
While she plays a harp and does yoga meditations, I'd rather be running around at Van's Warped Tour listening to punk music.
So long story short---your post really struck a chord with me and I had to let you know why! So funny.
I also love the post about the gay dog porn. That is hilarious! I am now a follower of your blog and will share it with others because I love your sense of humour and your writing style---& your photos are amazing!
I'm so glad I accidentally found you. For the first time ever I felt compelled to click on the NEXT BLOG button at the top of the page to see where it would lead me.
Voila--here I am---and I'll be back!

Everything about your sarcasm post was SO.FRICKN' TRUE.
LOVE your blog!
I totally love sarcasm, without it, I would be mere flotsam (or is it jetsam) on the ocean of life. I cannot resist adding comments to TV ads, newscasts and generally anyone nearby who leaves themselves vulnerable with their stupidity. Like, this band is playing at the Commodore live on Wednesday night (like they could play dead). Anyway, you hooked me, being sarcastic takes courage!!!
Nail on the head about home schooling. I went out with a girl who was home schooled...odd to say the least. Didn't like swearing, touching, sex of any kind (I once offended her when I found a raunchy novel and read it outloud at a party in a dirty sex voice... she left the room) Although I must say her sarcasm detector was working just fine.
But, I do have a friends who just doesnt grasp the concept. I mean I've said things that are clearly sarcastic to the point of ridiculousness and she would correct me as if I thought what I was saying was fact and she would correct me in the most discusting tone that screams "oh you poor stupid boy, you know nothing of life". Funny enough I am still friends with this person... what does that say about me??
Keep telling it like it is.
Love your sarcasm blog. Unfortunately, I am one of those people who take people far to seriously. BUT...I have never been and will never be home-schooled. I'm always the one that goes, "REALLY?!" and get those looks of exasperation and rolling eyes. It's mainly just habit but I think it's to do with my molly-coddling and serious parents.
I'm working on it though. :)
I. LOVE. SARCASM.
... and thats probably the first sentence I've ever written without using it.
And sarcasm is truth ... no matter how funny there is always an element of truth when sarcasm is used. Where would the world be without out it.
